Project Background
Travancore Aviations, a Kerala-based drone operations team, used Aeroyantra to execute a focused drone-mapping survey of an overhead water tank site in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, and convert imagery into a detailed, measurable 3D model.
At the time of survey, the structure was still under construction. The tank itself had not been installed yet, so the 3D model represents the current RCC staging and core construction stage.

Current construction-stage 3D model captured for technical review and planning.
For infrastructure assets like overhead tanks, the core requirement is not only visual inspection. Teams also need geometry they can measure and review in detail for follow-up technical decisions.
The objective of this survey was clear:
- Capture complete external geometry of the under-construction structure, including difficult-to-access upper zones
- Build a high-detail construction-stage 3D model suitable for deeper technical review
- Produce digital outputs that can support analysis, reporting, and future comparison surveys
The Challenge: Geometry + Access + Analysis
Construction-stage overhead water tank structures are difficult to document accurately with conventional methods:
- Repetitive RCC framing can reduce detail quality in low-overlap captures
- Elevated RCC staging increases operational complexity for manual measurement
- Teams often need both visual context and geometric data, not photos alone
- Follow-up analysis requires a consistent digital reference model, not one-time field notes
Travancore Aviations needed a workflow that could move from flight capture to analysis-ready 3D output without adding unnecessary processing delays.
Workflow Used with Aeroyantra
1. Survey Planning and Drone Capture
Aeroyantra worked with the team to design an orbital capture plan around the structure so image geometry would support high-quality 3D reconstruction.
The orbital planning approach included:
- Defining a safe circular flight path around the structure with consistent stand-off distance
- Running multiple orbit bands at different heights to capture lower, mid-band, and top geometry
- Capturing oblique images on each orbit so curved surfaces and edges reconstruct cleanly
- Adding a top-focused pass to improve upper slab and rim detail
- Maintaining overlap consistency across all passes to reduce model gaps
Beyond the flight path, we also helped structure the survey workflow end to end:
- Pre-flight checklist for wind, lighting, and obstacle clearance
- Capture sequence plan (low orbit to top orbit to top pass) for consistent datasets
- On-site QC checks to confirm image sharpness and coverage before demobilization
- Re-fly criteria for missed zones so the processing set stays complete
Capture strategy prioritized:
- Full circumferential coverage of the construction-stage structure
- Oblique perspectives for side-frame and top-edge definition
- Consistent image quality for stable point-cloud reconstruction
2. Cloud Processing and Model Generation
Imagery was uploaded to Aeroyantra and processed in the cloud to generate georeferenced mapping outputs:
- Dense point cloud
- Textured 3D model
- Orthomosaic
- Elevation products for contextual review
This let the team move from raw imagery to structured deliverables without local workstation bottlenecks.
"Excellent and low-cost software. It is one of the best I have experienced in my career."
- Anoop S R, Founder, Travancore Aviations (OPC) Private Limited
3. Analysis-Ready Output Preparation
The final model set was prepared for further technical analysis, including dimensional interpretation and structural context review workflows.
Because outputs are digital and georeferenced, the same dataset can also be used as a baseline for future condition comparison.
What Changed for the Team
From visual records to measurable 3D data
Instead of depending on images alone, Travancore Aviations produced a detailed 3D representation of the construction-stage structure that can be reviewed from multiple perspectives and used for measurements.
Better support for downstream engineering review
The model package enabled further analysis workflows on top of one consistent geometry source rather than fragmented notes and isolated photos.
Repeatable survey framework
With the same drone mapping workflow, follow-up surveys can be run in future cycles and compared against the current model for change tracking and condition monitoring.
Why This Case Matters
Many utility and infrastructure teams still treat overhead tank projects as one-off inspection tasks. This project shows a more scalable approach:
- Capture once with survey-grade drone mapping workflow
- Build a detailed 3D model
- Use that model as a working digital asset for ongoing analysis
For contractors, consultants, and municipal infrastructure teams, that shift improves both documentation quality and decision speed.
