Aeroyantra processes RTK, PPK and GCP-controlled datasets the same way: $0 to start, $2.50 per credit, about $20 for a typical 400-image map. GCP files import as plain CSV.
RTK Drone Mapping in One Paragraph
An RTK drone corrects its GNSS position in real time from a base station or correction network, so every photo is tagged with a centimetre-level position instead of the metre-level error of standalone GPS. That position is what ties the map to real-world coordinates. PPK reaches the same result by computing the corrections after the flight, and ground control points (GCPs) reach it by surveying marked targets on the ground.
Aeroyantra processes all three. Upload RTK-tagged images as they come off the drone, import GCPs and check points from a CSV, and every project gets a GCP quality report with RMSE in X, Y and Z. With RTK or PPK georeferencing and properly deployed ground control, Aeroyantra achieves 2-3 cm horizontal accuracy - and Aeroyantra processes RTK datasets with no GCPs at all while still reporting residuals against any check points you supply.
RTK vs PPK vs GCP
| RTK | PPK | GCPs only | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How positions are corrected | Live, from a base or network during the flight | After the flight, from logged rover and base data | Surveyed targets on the ground constrain the model |
| Needs a continuous correction link | Yes | No | No |
| Field effort | Lowest: fly, plus a few check points | Low: base station plus a few check points | Highest: place and survey 5-10+ targets |
| Typical failure | Dropouts in correction link mid-flight | Base data missing or wrong base coordinates | Poor distribution, unconstrained edges |
| Best for | Open sites with reliable correction coverage | Remote sites, long corridors, patchy coverage | Drones without RTK, or the highest vertical confidence |
In practice the strongest workflow combines them: RTK or PPK for the horizontal datum, plus a handful of surveyed points for vertical confidence and independent proof.

What Accuracy to Expect
These figures come from Aeroyantra's published GCP placement guide:
- No RTK, no GCPs - absolute error is metre-level. Fine for visual maps and relative measurements, not for survey work.
- No RTK, good GCPs - absolute error drops to 2-5 cm.
- RTK or PPK - horizontal accuracy is close to survey grade on its own. Vertical is where ground truth helps: on an RTK dataset, adding GCPs typically pulls vertical residuals from 8-12 cm down to 3-6 cm.
- RTK or PPK plus ground control - Aeroyantra achieves 2-3 cm horizontal accuracy.
Remember that GSD sets a floor on what any georeferencing can achieve: a map cannot be more precise than the ground its pixels cover. Use the GSD calculator guide to pick an altitude before you fly.
RTK Workflow on Aeroyantra
- Fly with a fixed RTK solution. Confirm the drone holds an RTK fix for the whole mission; images captured on a float or single solution carry the larger error.
- Survey three to five check points spread across the site and its elevation range. They are not used in processing - they exist to measure the result.
- Upload the images to a new survey in the browser. No conversion is needed; the positions are read from the image metadata.
- Import check points from CSV. Map your CSV columns (name, easting/northing or latitude/longitude, elevation), choose the coordinate system, and mark each point on the photos where it appears.
- Process and read the GCP quality report. It lists the X, Y, Z and 3D error at every point and the RMSE for the project, exportable as PDF or CSV for your client or your own QA file.
PPK Workflow on Aeroyantra
- Log raw GNSS data on the drone and on a base station set over a known point for the whole flight.
- Post-process the geotags in your GNSS or drone vendor's PPK software, which writes corrected positions back to the images.
- Upload the corrected images to Aeroyantra and continue exactly as in the RTK workflow: check points, processing, quality report.
Aeroyantra does not run the PPK correction itself; the corrected geotags come from your PPK tool, and Aeroyantra processes and verifies the result.
When You Still Need GCPs
- Vertical accuracy matters - volumes, grade control, drainage design and earthwork billing.
- The drone has no RTK or PPK - consumer and prosumer drones with standard GPS.
- The project needs a local datum - a site grid, a benchmark the client uses, or a state coordinate system that must match earlier surveys.
- Someone will audit the result - only independent check points let you prove the accuracy.
Five to ten well-distributed GCPs cover most sites up to about 50 hectares. Placement matters more than count: corners and perimeter first, one near the centre, spread across the elevation range. The GCP placement guide has the full method.
Surveying the control in India?
Aeroyantra's India team surveys control networks, check points and benchmark transfers with DGPS alongside the flight, so the drone data and the ground control share one datum.
In India, see DGPS survey services for ground control on its own or bundled with a drone survey.
RTK Drones for Mapping
| Drone | Why it is used for RTK mapping |
|---|---|
| DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise (with RTK module) | Light, portable, mechanical-shutter 20 MP camera |
| DJI Phantom 4 RTK | Long-standing survey workhorse with integrated RTK |
| DJI Matrice 350 RTK + Zenmuse P1 | 45 MP full-frame camera for larger sites and finer GSD |
| WingtraOne / eBee X | Fixed-wing PPK platforms for large areas |
All of them write geotagged images that Aeroyantra processes directly. The supported drones and cameras guide lists every model with its processing cost.
Coordinate Systems
Aeroyantra stores survey data with its coordinate reference system and exports outputs in the projection you choose, including a custom EPSG code for contours and other generated outputs. A built-in CRS converter helps when your control points are in a different system from your images. Getting the datum right before processing is the single most common fix for "the map is offset from my CAD drawing".

Pricing
Georeferencing method does not change the price. Aeroyantra charges by data processed: $0 to start, $2.50 per credit (one credit is one gigapixel), falling to $1.67 at volume, or $69/month on Professional with 40 credits included. A typical 400-image map from a 20 MP drone is 8 credits - about $20. See pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is RTK drone mapping?
RTK drone mapping uses a drone with a real-time kinematic GNSS receiver that corrects its position live from a base station or network, so every photo is tagged with a centimetre-level position. Aeroyantra processes RTK datasets without ground control points and still reports residuals against any check points you supply.
What is the difference between RTK and PPK?
Both correct the drone's GNSS positions to centimetre level. RTK applies the corrections live during the flight and needs a continuous correction link. PPK logs raw GNSS data on the drone and a base station and computes the corrections after the flight, so it is not affected by radio or network dropouts. For PPK datasets, the corrected positions are written to the images in your GNSS software before upload to Aeroyantra.
Do I still need GCPs with an RTK drone?
RTK removes the need for GCPs to establish the horizontal datum in most cases, but you still want three to five check points. Vertical accuracy benefits measurably from ground truth, typically pulling vertical residuals from 8-12 cm down to 3-6 cm, and without independent points there is no way to verify the result.
How accurate is RTK drone mapping?
With RTK or PPK georeferencing and properly deployed ground control, Aeroyantra achieves 2-3 cm horizontal accuracy. On RTK-only datasets the horizontal result is close to that, while vertical accuracy is where ground control helps most. The GCP quality report states RMSE in X, Y and Z for each project.
Which drones support RTK mapping?
Common RTK mapping drones include the DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise with the RTK module, the Phantom 4 RTK and the Matrice 350 RTK with a Zenmuse P1 camera, along with fixed-wing platforms such as the WingtraOne and eBee X. Aeroyantra processes geotagged images from all of them.
